How to travel with children
Going on a trip with your children sounds dreamy on paper, but the reality can sometimes be stressful for many parents! However, traveling as a family is a wonderful opportunity to raise your children's awareness of the world around them, by discovering new cultures and landscapes to create your next memories together.
Our dear friends at Evaneos, your family travel partner, have suggested we tackle the following question:
How to travel with children? 🧳
Because depending on the age, destination, time of year, or length of stay, traveling with babies and kids isn’t always easy — it's true! So here are our best tips to make the most of it:
The importance of preparing your family trip
📅 Involve the family in the planning process 📅
How?
By giving your children (depending on their age, of course) a role in planning the trip, including choosing the destination or activities.
You can start by involving them in packing their suitcases, explaining what types of clothes to pick based on the destination or length of stay. Together, you can decide what to bring for the trip, like snacks for hunger pangs or games to pass the time.
Then, why not explore the destination together?
You can talk about the location, the climate, the language spoken, or even the distance you'll be traveling.
These little tips help your kids visualize the trip before the big day, making it easier for them to understand what's coming while also sparking their curiosity!
🌏 Anticipez le stress et prévoyez une routine sur place 🌏
Traveling can be tiring for your children, so don’t hesitate to plan strategies for managing transportation or waiting times during the trip.
For example, jet lag can be unsettling for little ones (or "jet horror," as Lou, our office mascot at 6 years old, calls it 😨).
Try to incorporate rest periods into your schedule, as your children’s sleep is crucial. After all, vacations are meant for relaxation, right?
If you’re dealing with time zone changes (jet lag), we recommend adjusting to the local schedule as soon as possible, especially for mealtimes and bedtimes (even if it means taking short naps in between).
Make your children active participants in their travels
🎈 Choose the activities together 🎈
How about involving your children in planning activities based on their preferences or interests?
You can offer them several options for certain days and invite them to look at books or watch documentaries to help them decide what they’d like to explore.
If it’s rainy this weekend, should you visit the aquarium or explore a castle? And if it’s sunny tomorrow, should you swim at the beach or go for a forest hike?
Giving them choices helps them feel involved and excited. After all, the goal is for everyone to have their dream vacation!
🎬 Involve your children in the exploration 🎬
Imagine your children becoming real explorers—it's easy to do! When discovering a new place (or if boredom seems to be approaching), give them custom missions.
How about letting your child film a report with your phone to show you later? Or give them a list of items to find at a site you’re visiting? Or teach them a few words in the local language? 🕵️
To keep them engaged during the trip, encourage them to document their discoveries with a journal, photos, videos, or drawings!
Then, review their findings together to solidify these memories.
🖼️ Create memories together 🖼️
Making family memories is essential during your trip.
Whether it's crafting souvenirs, taking photos together to create an album at the end of the stay, or reminiscing about the best moments of the vacation before heading home, remind your children how the trip strengthened your family bonds!
And as you look through the souvenirs from your last vacation, you might already start thinking about your next family destination. ☀️
